Skaftafell National Park was established in 1967 and is the oldest park in Iceland. It merged with Jökulsárgljúfur National Park in 2008 to create Vatnajökull National Park. Out of these parks Skaftafell is the most accessible by motorhome. It runs along the coast covering nearly 1500 km².

12% of the park area is off-glacier and is very accessible by motorhome with good camping facilities. It is also the area that has the highest sunshine rate in the southern area of ​​the country and is a peaceful haven of lush vegetation and exceptional views. The park has many beautiful, easy hikes. You can walk to Svartifoss, a waterfall 20 metres high set amidst stunning scenery. Sjonarsker is a beautiful viewpoint to hike to.
