Explore Botswana by 4x4
If you're dreaming of vast African savannahs and wild animals roaming free, then Botswana will enchant you. This is not a destination for the faint-hearted considering the heat and dust. Botswana is for the more intrepid traveller. Discover the wide, open spaces of the savannahs, deserts, swamps and salt marshes, as well as traditional villages that may require a little time and effort to appreciate.
Botswana, formerly Bechuanaland, is often called the "African miracle". Covering an area of 582,000 km², it extends 110 km from north to south and 960 km from east to west. Much of the country is a vast, sandy basin characterized by scrubby savannah. The Kalahari (Kgalagadi), a semi-arid expanse of sand deposits and long sandy valleys, covers 85% of the territory, including the central and southwest areas. In the northwest, the Okavango River flows from Namibia and permeates the land forming the Okavango delta, a real paradise. Northeast lies the great salt deserts of the Makgadikgadi Pans.
