There is nothing better than hiking to discover the New Zealand wilderness. During your motorhome road trip stop for a few hours and follow one of the many hiking trails on offer. The Great Walks are the most famous hiking trails in the national parks of New Zealand. To access them you need a pass which can be obtained directly from the Department of Conservation.

Tongario Nothern Circuit

This trail on the North Isalnd will introduce you to the Tongariro National Park. You will be surrounded by volcanic scenery and you can admire Mount Ngauruhoe. A landscape of craters and lava awaits you. You will be amazed by the spectacular turquoise colour of the Emerald Lakes formed in craters of different volcanoes.

Waikaremoana Track

This trail goes through the heart of Te Urewera National Park on the North Island. When entering the park you will walk through the ancestral home of the Ngai Tuhoe and the enchanted forest, with its rich vegetation and impressively diverse bird life. Don't miss the largest and deepest lake on the North Island, the beautiful Lake Waikaremonana.

Abel Tasman Coast Track

This hike takes you into the Abel Tasman National Park on the South Island, known for its beautiful beaches, water creeks, granite rock formations and numerous marine animals. You may come across seals and penguins.

Heaphy Track

This trail is also known as the road of contrasts, as you will discover forests, pastures, high mountains, palm beaches, numerous caves and rock arches. It places you in the heart of the Kahurangi National Park on the South Island.

Kepler Track

This trail is situated in the Fiordland National Park on the South Island in the foothills of the Kepler mountains. Admire lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, as well as glaciers, waterfalls and magnificent forests.

Milford Track

This is the best known hiking trail in New Zealand. Located in the Fiordland National Park, south of the country, you will cross suspension bridges and wooden walkways while admiring the mountains, spectacular fjords and the highest waterfall in New Zealand, the Sutherland Falls.

Routeburn Track

Located south of New Zealand, this trail connects the Mount Aspiring National Park to Fiordland. This hike offers the most beautiful Te Wahipounamu landscapes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy the beauty of the fjords, rocky coasts, cliffs, lakes and waterfalls.

Rakiura Track

You will need to take the ferry to do this hike, as it is on Stewart Island. You can leave your motorhome in the ferry parking and visit the island. A haven of peace, quiet and seclusion awaits you. You will discover wild beaches and a wide variety of birds including the kiwi.
