Salta and the surrounding region is certainly one of the most beautiful areas in Argentina. This lovely provincial town was built in the 16th centruy in the northwest of the country. It is nestled at an altitude of 1200 metres and is a real testament to the colonial era.

The main architectural features of the city centre and the religious buildings date from the Spanish colonial era. The Cabildo, formerly used as a headquarters of the colony, is the best preserved building. The 18th century cathedral, the San Francisco baroque church and the San Bernardo convent are some unique monuments. The city has also maintained many colonial houses that belonged to large, wealthy families.

Salta is a culturally rich city. Peñas are often organized with songs and folk dances. Many cultural and historical events punctuate life in Salta, such as carnivals, the procession of a miracle and commemorations of the battles of the War of Independence. The Salta region is also a real natural wonder.
