The highest sand dune in the world
In the heart of the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, the orange dunes of Sossuvlei dominate the skyline. These dunes are the highes in the world, reaching over 350 metres.
Access to Sossuvlei is via the Sesriem entrance of Namib-Naukluft National Park. After fifty kilometers the road can only be continued on foot, by 4x4 or by an official park vehicle. The park is closed after dark and campsites are available nearby. They must be booked well in advance.
Climbing to the top of the dunes will ensure the best views. It takes a minimum of 1 hour to reach the crest of the highest of them and the climb should be attempted outside of the hottest hours of the day. Once at the top you can listen to the song of the sand carried by the wind and enjoy the tranquility. The dunes can also be appreciated by plane or hot air balloon excursions.
The most famous dune is Deadvlei, with its dead trees giving the landscape an extreme, but fascinating, feeling of desolation. Next to Sesriem there is a canyon 40 m deep and 3 km long with superb geological formations. The desert is also the kingdom of oryx, springbok, ostriches, bustards and vultures, so keep your eyes open!

Avoid driving at night and always spend the night in established campsites.
It is important to reserve your campsite in advance during peak seasons.
For 5 - 6 passengers we recommend booking long in advance.
For certain park and nature reserve roads (except Kruger) a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
